Grocery bill

I am curious what a typical week at the grocery store is for everyone. I have been making a slow transition to the whole foods diet for about a year now (because my husband is less than supportive). I have decided to get off the fence and just go for it and am trying to stock my pantry with whole food staples and it is really adding up. I expect it to be more in the beginning, but I am curious what I can expect to spend in the future.

Good question. I think once you stock up on the basics the price should even out.
organic veggies can be pricey, so I try to buy more of what is in season, because those are cheaper. I'll wait until the price of organic strawberries comes down later in spring before I buy them. But beans and tofu are cheap. Rice is cheap.
I feed 5 of us (and I find we are eating more as the kids get older, and this includes my trips to Costco where I buy other stuff like TP etc.) on about 150 a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. And I also sometimes splurge on the fancy cheeses. So anyway, hope that helps a smidgen.
Good luck Mindi. Someday your hubby will appreciate your efforts!

Oh, yeah, and I don't make my own bread. I buy the whole wheat artisan bread at Harmons which is about four bucks a loaf. We go through about 4 loaves a week. I know I could find lots of othere ways I could save on my budget, but part of me is lazy and just likes to buy the bread. I am sure you could do it much cheaper than I do.

I always thought it would be expensive to eat whole foods, but it hasn't been too bad. For our family of 2 adults and 2 toddlers we spend about $250 a month on food. With that we eat very little meat and no dairy. Most of our budget goes to fruits and veggies and staples like grains and olive oil. I order rice milk in bulk from our grocery store and save money there, I also bought bulk coconut oil from Azure Standard.
I have learned that once you learn how to shop, especially where to go it's not much more expensive than eating 'normal' food.

I enjoy this blog! I budget between $400-$500/month. I also shop sales and do not only eat organic fruit and veg - but try to mostly eat organic and whole grains. This budget is for household items too. I find I can do it on $100 a week .... but I also like to splurge on cheeses / organic meat. We do not eat much meat.

No kids in our household, and we eat pretty well--mostly organic and whole grains and I splurge on desserts. We spend around $70 a week, but that includes most household items as well.

once you get your staples (rice, flours, oils etc) it isn't bad at all. We spent about $60 a week at the grocery store, but have just switched from buying cows milk to buying rice milk. I haven't yet factored in the cost for that yet, but... I really thought it would be more but was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it is, and I have now lost my desire to eat processed and pre made foods. It has to be from scratch, or it has no flavor!
